This technical publication describes how to simulate extended sources in the Advanced Systems Analysis Program (ASAP®) from Breault Research Organization (BRO). A brief discussion of some of the important general issues in modeling extended sources is included. A light-emitting diode is used to illustrate a variety of source modeling techniques in ASAP.
Incoherent, extended sources are all around us. Incandescent bulbs, fluorescent tubes, discharge sources, and light emitting diodes (LEDs) are all examples of extended sources. Extended sources are physically and mathematically different than the point sources commonly used in lens design. The differences are significant enough that optical design and analysis software must have the capability to simulate point sources as well as extended sources.
