System Analysis & Design

When optical engineering services are required, BRO's engineering department supplements clients' existing resources or serves as the primary engineering team. We can analyze and improve existing systems or start from as little as an idea. We work with our clients to define the problem and provide the best possible solution. The BRO team brings experience in all aspects of optical design, simulation, performance analysis, tolerance specification, and manufacturing.

A Diverse, Capable Team

BRO's engineering team consists of over a dozen optical, mechanical, and electrical engineers capable of developing a myriad of products that make light do useful work. Through our quality system, we work with clients to define project objectives and design parameters, then we document designs, analyses, drawings, test plans, and work instructions, which can be given directly to you, or to your designated contract manufacturing firm.

A Systematic and Powerful Approach

From the day you first contact BRO for information, we make sure our working relationship is simple and straightforward. Our customers know what to expect, including timeframe and cost. BRO stresses communication throughout the design process, with a formal review at the end of each phase. BRO is ISO 9001:2008 registered, which is part of the system ensuring that tasks are achieved according to schedule and communication remains open between you and our project managers.

Feasibility Studies

Feasibility Studies

BRO has tremendous experience in solving optics problems. If you have broken your pick on a problem again and again and want an expert opinion, BRO is available to outline your engineering project and tell you if the solution you seek violates the laws of physics.

We work with our clients to define and quantify objectives and requirements. BRO engineers evaluate the proposed design from a system perspective, taking into account the optical, mechanical, electrical, and software elements. Our team can warn you well in advance of barriers to your success. We have saved companies time and money with this service, which is also the first proof-of-concept step in every engineering design project we accept.

Prototyping

Engineering Capabilities - Prototyping

BRO builds, tests, and evaluates working prototypes of electro-optical and opto-mechanical products. We will even design and build custom equipment and software required to control and test a system's functionality. We also do limited production runs and pilot-line setups, and specify qualified vendors and manufacturing work instructions. BRO either fabricates the units in-house, or provides value-added oversight and coordination of OEM manufacturers to deliver a complete manufacturing solution.

Designs for the Real World

Your company and the team of BRO engineers share common goals. We both want to create a superior product, and bring it to market on time and on budget. If your product contains an optical component, you will appreciate having experienced optical engineers working for you. Following are a few samples of our work.

Precision Design and Manufacturing

BRO was involved in the engineering, manufacturing, development, and testing of the Tactical Tomahawk DSMAC Illuminator Unit. This unit, consisting of high-voltage circuitry, mechanical housing, Xenon lamp and reflector, required a pulsed-high power optical output beam with precision uniformity. BRO designed the reflector to meet the uniformity requirements and integrated the system to include testing and documentation. We developed test documents to include assembly and test procedures, acceptance tests, design verification tests, Highly Accelerated Life Testing (HALT) and Highly Accelerated Stress Screening (HASS) tests. The acceptance test station was also developed at BRO to test voltage levels and timing and beam uniformity. Flight-qualified units were delivered to the customer.

Budget and Time Conscious

One of BRO's fiber luminaire customers required a low-cost solution, and had to have a working product within a few months. Budget and time constraints made a custom reflector design and fabrication prohibitive. The project required high optical power, a high degree of uniformity, and a tight specification for color temperature. BRO devised a solution that was immediately available and represented considerable cost savings to the customer. By testing different off-the-shelf reflectors, we found a solution that met the optical output power, had acceptable uniformity and color temperature, and worked with our client's budget and time constraints.

Testing

Engineering Capabilities - Testing

BRO tests off-the-shelf, customer-supplied products, or as part of our product development process will work with the customer to develop test plans. Test plans may include acceptance tests, design verification tests, Highly Accelerated Life Testing (HALT), and Highly Accelerated Stress Screening (HASS).

If necessary, BRO will purchase special test equipment or arrange for and supervise outsourced testing. The test phase ensures that the unit under test performs according to stated specifications.

BRO has a modern facility fully equipped for product testing, including:

  • Two optics labs stocked with optical tables, mounts, light sources, etc.
  • Electronic assembly/test room with electro-static discharge (ESD) safe benches and tools
  • Illumination testing laboratory
  • Special test equipment: power meters, CCD cameras, detectors, etc.
  • High-Rate thermal chamber
  • Wyko 400 interferometer to include a Heidenhain distance measuring system for radius measurements and various transmission flats and spheres
  • Gamma Scientific DR-2000 for radiometric and photometric measurements
  • Nikon alignment Telescope
  • Shaker table
  • Milling machine
  • Granite vibration isolated test bench
