The BRO Code for Young Men

Your twenties are where the man you will be at fifty gets built, one boring good habit at a time. Here is the list we wish somebody had taped to our bathroom mirror.

Share

Do

  1. Get up at the same time every day.

Discipline is boring. That is why it works.

  2. Learn a skill someone will pay for.

Welding, coding, selling, plumbing. The world pays people who can do things.

  3. Save something from every paycheck.

Even twenty bucks. At first the habit is worth more than the money.

  4. Learn what things cost.

Pay rent at home or move out. Your parents have been hiding the electric bill from you for years.

  5. Find older men worth copying.

Buy them lunch. Ask questions. Listen more than you talk.

  6. Train your body and read books.

A strong back with nothing upstairs is just furniture.

  7. Keep your room like you expect company.

Someday you will have a family and a house. Practice on the room.

  8. Treat every woman with respect, every time.

Your mother, your sister and your future wife are all counting on how you practice now.

  9. Learn to cook five meals.

Eggs, chili, pasta, a steak, and one thing that impresses her parents.

  10. Show up to work early and leave the phone in your pocket.

You will get promoted for reasons that seem too simple to be true.

  11. Pay the card off every month.

Future you, trying to buy a house, is begging.

  12. Call your grandparents.

They have stories, wisdom and, occasionally, a truck they are thinking of selling cheap.

  13. Finish what you start.

One finished project beats five brilliant plans.

  14. Say sorry like a man: quickly, clearly and without "but."

Don't

  1. Don't spend your twenties on the couch with a controller.

The game has a save button. Your twenties do not.

  2. Don't take money advice from a guy in a rented sports car.

If he were rich from trading, he would not need your subscription.

  3. Don't gamble your paycheck.

The house always wins. That is why it owns a house and you rent.

  4. Don't drink to fit in.

The friends worth having will still like you with a soda.

  5. Don't finance a car to impress people you don't like.

They will forget the car. The payments will not forget you.

  6. Don't ghost people.

Say "this isn't for me." It takes eight seconds and it is what men do.

  7. Don't wait for motivation.

Motivation shows up after you start, like a coworker who is always late.

  8. Don't argue with strangers online.

You will never win, and you will lose an evening.

  9. Don't quit a job without another one lined up.

Dramatic exits look great in movies. Rent is not a movie.

  10. Don't let a screen teach you what a man is.

Look around your real life. You will find better examples mowing lawns.

  11. Don't make permanent decisions on temporary feelings.

Tattoos, text messages and quitting. Sleep on all three.

  12. Don't sleep until noon.

The best opportunities in the world have already gone to lunch by then.

  13. Don't use anybody to prove anything.

    Respect is the proof.
